How PSL changed Shadab Khan’s life

DUBAI: Shadab Khan was among the finds from last year’s Pakistan Super League (PSL) tournament who went on to represent the country and bring home the Champions Trophy for Pakistan. Little was known about the teenage leg-spinner from Mianwali before he burst onto the scene last year and took the PSL by storm. “No one knew me when I came to the PSL last year,” Shadab told Geo.tv. As he narrated his journey to last year’s tournament, the bowler said he knew performing well in the PSL would lead to the national side. “I told my friend last year that being picked by Islamabad United was my chance and I would play for the national side.” Shadab was 18 when he made his PSL debut and his incredible performances didn’t go unnoticed. He was his team’s most potent bowling weapon as he left batsmen bamboozled with his variety of deliveries including a lethal googly. Shadab stresses the PSL has created opportunities for younger cricketers to showcase their talent against international-level c

Crypto 'noobs' learn to cope with wild swings in digital coins

http://ift.tt/2EROzrF NEW YORK: After researching digital currencies for work last year, personal finance writer JR Duren hopped on his own crypto-rollercoaster. Duren bought $5 worth of litecoin in November, and eventually purchased $400 more, mostly with his credit card. In just a few months, he experienced a rally, a crash and a recovery, with the adrenaline highs and lows that come along. “At first, I was freaking out,” Duren said about watching his portfolio plunge 40 percent at one point. “The precipitous drop came as a shock.” The 39-year-old Floridian is part of the new class of crypto-investors who do not necessarily think bitcoin will replace the U.S. dollar, or that blockchain will revolutionize modern finance or that dentists should have their own currency. Dubbed by longtime crypto-investors as “the noobs”– online lingo for “newbies” – they are ordinary investors hopping onto the latest trend, often with little understanding of how cryptocurrencies work or why they ex

CPR survival rates are lower than most people think

http://ift.tt/2BQsU0i The majority of people believe cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is successful more often than it tends to be in reality, according to a small U.S. study. This overly optimistic view, which may partly stem from seeing happy outcomes in television medical dramas, can get in the way of decision-making and frank conversations about end of life care with doctors, the research team writes in American Journal of Emergency Medicine. CPR is intended to restart a heart that has stopped beating, known as cardiac arrest, which is typically caused by an electrical disturbance in the heart muscle. Although a heart attack is not the same thing – it occurs when blood flow to the heart is partly or completely blocked, often by a clot – a heart attack can also cause the heart to stop beating. Whatever the cause of cardiac arrest, restarting the heart as quickly as possible to get blood flowing to the brain is essential to preventing permanent brain damage. More often than no

Apple moves to store iCloud keys in China, raising human rights fears

http://ift.tt/2BQ0S52 SAN FRANCISCO/BEIJING: When Apple Inc begins hosting Chinese users’ iCloud accounts in a new Chinese data centre at the end of this month to comply with new laws there, Chinese authorities will have far easier access to text messages, email and other data stored in the cloud. That’s because of a change to how the company handles the cryptographic keys needed to unlock an iCloud account. Until now, such keys have always been stored in the United States, meaning that any government or law enforcement authority seeking access to a Chinese iCloud account needed to go through the U.S. legal system. Now, according to Apple, for the first time the company will store the keys for Chinese iCloud accounts in China itself. That means Chinese authorities will no longer have to use the U.S. courts to seek information on iCloud users and can instead use their own legal system to ask Apple to hand over iCloud data for Chinese users, legal experts said. Russia denies diplomatic mail was used for Argentina cocaine traffic

http://ift.tt/2CGfHE1 MOSCOW: Russia’s diplomatic mail was not used for cocaine traffic in Argentina, a foreign ministry spokeswoman said on Saturday, after police busted an international ring of drug smugglers. The investigation started in 2016, when the Russian ambassador to Argentina called local authorities to report that traffickers were trying to move 16 bags of cocaine from the Buenos Aires embassy by way of a diplomatic flight. Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, said on social media that the information about smugglers using diplomatic mail “was not true”. The investigation led to the arrest on Wednesday of an Argentine policeman and another citizen of the South American country. Others involved in the scheme had been arrested in Russia, while one of the leaders of the plot was still on the run, Argentina’s Security Minister Patricia Bullrich told reporters earlier this week. Zakharova said the cocaine was destined for Europe and belonged t

Low fat diet as effective as low carb for losing weight

http://ift.tt/2Cee58I Reducing either carbohydrates or fats from the diet shaves off excess weight in about the same proportion, claims a new study. Published in the journal JAMA, the study stated that the fundamental strategy for losing weight with either a low-fat or a low-carb approach is the same -- eat less sugar, less refined flour and as many vegetables as possible. Go for whole foods, whether that is a wheatberry salad or grass-fed beef. The finding puts an end to a long-argued debate about "what's the best diet". "We've all heard stories of a friend who went on one diet -- it worked great -- and then another friend tried the same diet, and it didn't work at all," said Christopher Gardner, Professor of medicine at Stanford University in California. "It's because we're all very different, and we're just starting to understand the reasons for this diversity. Maybe we shouldn't be asking what's the best diet, but what&

James Rodriguez - Bayern Munich's 'godsend'

http://ift.tt/2GqHqur Unloved at Real Madrid, yet declared a "godsend" by Bayern Munich, James Rodriguez has rebooted his stuttering career in Bavaria and is set to shine again in the Champions League. In his preferred attacking midfield role, Rodriguez is set to face Besiktas on Tuesday in the first leg of the last-16 tie at Munich's Allianz Arena. In Germany, the Colombia international has rediscovered the form which saw him light up the 2014 World Cup and finish as the competition's top scorer. Working alongside veteran head coach Jupp Heynckes has rejuvenated the 26-year-old after three challenging seasons at Real, where he fell out of favour under Zinedine Zidane. Real paid Monaco 75 million euros ($93 million) in the wake of his dazzling displays in Brazil four years ago, but the Spanish giants shipped him out to Bayern on a two-year loan deal last June. Is VAR ready for Premier League rollout?

http://ift.tt/2BDEqvJ VAR technology is back in the spotlight after Manchester United's Juan Mata was controversially denied a goal in a confusing incident that raises questions over whether it is ready for a Premier League rollout. The video assistant referee system has been trialled in hundreds of matches around the world to review key moments linked to goals, penalty decisions, red-card incidents and cases of mistaken identity. Football's governing body FIFA will decide next month whether to officially endorse the VAR system, a move that could see the controversial technology used at the World Cup. The Premier League is lagging behind the Bundesliga and Serie A, which are testing the technology this season but Saturday's incident, which saw a Mata goal cancelled out after a lengthy delay, was just the latest in a series of contentious moments involving VAR in England. AFP Sports looks at the key issues that must be resolved. Is it reliable? Hawk-Eye, whose goal-li

India bank hack 'similar' to $81 million Bangladesh central bank heist

http://ift.tt/2C73lsr NEW DELHI: Hackers who tried to steal nearly $2 million from India’s City Union Bank this month used tactics similar to those employed in the unsolved cyber heist of $81 million from Bangladesh’s central bank in 2016, City’s CEO said on Monday. The unknown hackers disabled the City printer connected to global payments platform SWIFT on Feb. 6, preventing the bank from receiving acknowledgement messages for three fraudulent payment instruction sent that evening until the next morning. “Nobody suspected that it was an attack and thought it was a systemic network failure,” N. Kamakodi told Reuters by phone. “The system department people, everybody assembled, analyzed the problem, rebooted, they closed shop only around 10-10.30 in the night.” The next morning, bank officials managed to reconcile the previous day’s transactions and found out “three transactions which were not originated from our bank”. The bank had been able block only one of the transfers worth $

Kuwait invites Philippine president to visit amid workers row

http://ift.tt/2Ffo24p KUWAIT: Kuwait has invited Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to visit, state news agency KUNA said on Monday, as the countries seek to settle their differences over allegations of extreme abuse of migrant workers in the wealthy Gulf state. After the body of a Filipino was discovered in a freezer in a Kuwait apartment, Duterte arranged free flights for workers wishing to leave - an evacuation that Kuwait said was an unnecessary escalation of a diplomatic rift. The Philippines suspended sending workers to Kuwait in January after reports that abuse by employers had driven several to suicide. Kuwait’s Deputy Foreign Minister Khalid al-Jarallah said on Monday that the two countries had agreed to sign a deal to regulate working conditions. “We proposed to the Philippine authorities to resolve and contain these issues and not to escalate them in the media. There was agreement on this ... and we received a response,” he was quoted as saying. Two planes full of wo

A few minutes later, Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation said it could not confirm the wreckage had been discovered. “We are facing a total enigma. We do not know anything about the crash,” Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development Abbas Akhoundi was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency shortly after his arrival in Semirom. Iran asked E
